Now, there have been cases, of course, of drug makers merely reformulating just to get around their expired patents, but drug companies are businesses, and must have short-term equity to help with long-term research. Of course I don’t believe unilaterally that every product has the full intent of healing the consumer…but the nature of competition is such that the goal of new products is to improve on existing ones, usually with the effect that they’re safer and/or more potent.
