Although companies such as Pozen and Horizon Therapeutics, among others, are trying to make safer painkillers by combining antacids with over-the-counter pain relievers, Biolipox is actually trying to make the “perfect” painkiller. They hope to do so by engineering a painkiller that doesn’t block the heart and stomach-protecting substances called prostaglandins.

More “safe” painkiller competition
Horizon Therapeutics, in addition to Pozen, which I blogged about earlier, is developing a safer non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The idea is to bundle a PPI inhibitor (basically, an antacid) with the painkiller–in this case, ibuprofen–to lessen the stomach-acid producing effects of painkillers.
