More “safe” painkiller competition
Horizon Therapeutics, in addition to Pozen, which I blogged about earlier, is developing a safer non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The idea is to bundle a PPI inhibitor (basically, an antacid) with the painkiller–in this case, ibuprofen–to lessen the stomach-acid producing effects of painkillers.

Sirtris Pharma isn’t the only company working on sirtuin research; Elixir Pharma is too.
I wonder if, assuming these get approved, we’d need a prescription for them? After all, they are naturally occuring compounds, and they (thus far) don’t appear to have _any_ side-effects, though I can see the potential for abuse.
VaxGen dramatically restructures after losing Anthrax contract
Another massive biotech failure: VaxGen, who was developing both Smallpox and Anthrax vaccine vandidates for the US Government, has announced it’s laying off 51% of its workforce, in response to the cancellation of its government Anthrax contract.
Incidentally, the third hit on Google for “VaxGen” yields a website (“AidsVax flops”) devoted to their storied past [...]
